NYPD, Microsoft create crime-fighting tech system

NEW YORK (AP) - The New York Police Department has teamed up with Microsoft to create futuristic-sounding computer technology that could help officers fight crime in real time.

It's called the Domain Awareness System, or "the dashboard" for short. It instantly mines data from the department's arrest records, 911 calls, security cameras, license plate readers and radiation detectors and assembles it in an easy-to-use form.

Right now, the system is used only in New York Police Department offices. Eventually, the force hopes to make it available to officers via their squad car laptops or their mobile devices.

Under an unprecedented marketing deal with Microsoft, the company can sell the system to other law enforcement agencies, and the city will get a 30 percent cut. That means the city could make millions.
