When The Going Gets Tough, Democrats Get Absurd

RSS Feed

I agree – “The Absurdity of #NOKINGS.”  It is amazing that the absurdity of the very idea itself needs pointing out, but in the end I just wish the absurdity ended there.  There is this, “The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in a 4-1 vote declared an emergency in response to federal immigration raids, a move usually reserved for natural disasters or other conditions beyond the control of local officials.” Which, in light of #NOKINGS is truly absurd since the point of an emergency declaration is to activate powers that give the local government incredible amounts of king-like authority to, you know, like shut everything down for a bad flu.  And the absurdity continues.

Let’s look at some of their leading lights.  Apparently, the AI that powers the robotic Gavin Newsom glitched on the word “interesting.”  Somebody needed to take over manual control on this one.

Kamala Harris did an event the other day that produced two interesting results.  First there is this actually from Harris’ mouth, “Some people have said I was the most qualified candidate ever to run for president.”  Which brings this to mind.  Who precisely is “some people?”  At least the pro wrestler just linked has a source.  At the same event a protester called her “a right wing war criminal.”  Much is being made of Harris’ over-the-top reaction to the accusation, but I could not get past its absurdity.  Admittedly Harris is a policy chameleon, but she has never approached anything near the right wing.

In point of fact things have gotten so absurd on the Democrat side, that they are starting to act like they are stranded on a desert island and sizing each other up to decide which one will be the first meal.

All of which brings me to the wonderful profile of Harmeet Dillion, current assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the D.O.J., in The Free Press.  Dillion is generating enormous change at that division in almost every aspect of its operation.  At the heart of it all lies what may be the ultimate Democrat absurdity – that you can cure discrimination by discriminating.  Of course, the piece constantly refers to her relationship with the White House, dealing with complaints that her division is supposed to be above politics.  But don’t forget the immortal words of the Chief Justice, “The way to stop discrimination on the basis of race is to stop discriminating on the basis of race.”

My favorite change:

“Statistical cases” is a reference to a doctrine of civil rights law known as “disparate impact.” This means that a business or government agency will run afoul of the 1964 Civil Rights Act if the application process yields “a lower-than-random number of protected minorities,” as Christopher Caldwell wrote earlier this year in The Free Press, regardless of whether policies were in place that proved discriminatory intent was no longer necessary to bring cases under civil rights law….

In April, the Trump White House issued a new executive order aimed directly at the disparate impact doctrine. Now it is the policy of the U.S. government “to eliminate the use of disparate-impact liability in all contexts to the maximum degree possible to avoid violating the Constitution, federal civil rights laws, and basic American ideals.”

The amount of mischief that has flowed from the gross misunderstanding and abuse of statistical modeling that is disparate-impact doctrine cannot be underestimated.  It focuses on a single statistical measure in a situation where hundreds, if not thousands, are active.  Such misunderstanding and abuse lies at the heart of all the gross government overreach we witnessed during covid and are still trying to shake off – as just a single example.

Absurd politics, absurd policy and the absurd application of policy.  That is where the Democrat Party currently stands.
