Why does the grass on the other side of the fence always look greener than God’s grass?

“I don’t love my husband anymore,” a young wife confided in me. “Everyone else’s husband looks more desirable than mine!” This woman left her husband and enticed a young father away from his children. After a short time, she grew restless again. “Older men look more appetizing than younger men,” she said wistfully.

When I was a student, I couldn’t decide what courses to take Everyone else’s major looked so much more interesting than mine. When I got married, other men seemed to have better jobs than my husband had. When I had children, other houses looked more useful for rearing a family. I kept studying that grass on the other side of the fence.

Even though the grass on the other side of the fence looks greener, it doesn’t satisfy like God’s grass! The Good Shepherd led his sheep to the good grass. The green meadow, or God’s grass, is obedience. Feed on it, and you will find rest for your soul beside a peaceful stream. Like a happy lamb, you will lie down and find comfort in doing the shepherd’s will. Through the years, I have come to realize that, when I follow the Shepherd and feed on his will for my life, I find all I ever needed, all I ever wanted, and all I ever imagined could be mine.
