There’s a revival play running off Broadway right now, revisiting one of the more combustible chapters in American political history: the anti-communist hearings of the McCarthy era.

You know the phrase. “Are you now or have you ever been…”

For younger Americans, the entire period feels almost mythical. Grainy black-and-white footage. Angry senators. Witness tables. Careers destroyed. Whispered accusations of communist sympathies and Soviet infiltration.

My friend Michael Riedel—the longtime Broadway columnist for the New York Post—is hosting audience talkbacks after performances of the show. He joined me on the air Friday to discuss it, and what struck me all over again is how fundamentally different America was then from what it is now.

Back then, Marxism, communism, socialism, and totalitarianism were not fashionable campus accessories or podcast aesthetics.

They were despised.

The American public had watched tens of millions die under Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and fascist regimes spreading across Europe and Asia. They had fought a world war. They had buried sons. They had watched free nations nearly disappear under authoritarian boots.

So, when allegations surfaced about communist influence inside institutions, Americans took it seriously.

Now, let’s be fair about history.

Joseph McCarthy and some of the investigators absolutely went too far in certain cases. Innocent people were smeared. Careers were ruined based on flimsy associations or hysteria. Fear can metastasize quickly in any society.

But here’s the part modern revisionists often ignore: The broader American rejection of communism itself was morally correct.

Communism was evil. Marxism was destructive. Totalitarianism murdered human beings by the millions. And Americans—Democrats included—understood that instinctively.

According to Blanche, DOJ officials recently uncovered a cache of Jack Smith-related documents hidden away in what was essentially a forgotten room inside the Department of Justice. Not archived transparently. Not cataloged responsibly. Just… sitting there. Waiting to be found by people the previous administration apparently assumed would never come looking.

Now let’s all pause for the ceremonial Washington explanation.

“I’m sure it was an innocent oversight.”

Right. And I’m sure Hunter Biden’s laptop was Russian opera fan fiction.

An Excerpt from Texas Just Won a Border Fight That Common Sense Settled Years Ago

Texas just scored a significant legal victory in its ongoing fight to protect its citizens from the consequences of federal immigration negligence.

And before the constitutional scholars start firing off angry emails, let me say something up front:

Yes, immigration enforcement is primarily a federal responsibility. It should be. The Constitution largely says so. 

The federal government should lead. The federal government should enforce. The federal government should secure the border. The federal government should do the job taxpayers are paying it to do. Which, as it turns out, was exactly the problem.

For four years under Joe Biden and Alejandro Mayorkas, Americans were told two things simultaneously.

First, that only the federal government could enforce immigration law.

Second, that the federal government wasn’t particularly interested in enforcing much of it.

And then came the third part—the really magical part. States weren’t allowed to do much about it either.

Now maybe it’s because I started working in radio when I was 14 years old, but I’ve spent most of my life listening to people explain things. And whenever someone has to explain something that hard, that often, and with that many lawyers involved, there’s usually a pretty good chance the explanation isn’t nearly as convincing as they think it is.

The Biden Administration’s position essentially boiled down to this:

“Only we can enforce immigration law.”

“Okay,” said Texas. “Then enforce it.”

“No.”

“Then we’ll help.”

“Also no.”

Apparently, that was supposed to sound persuasive. It didn’t.

It sounded like the kind of argument your children make when they don’t want to do a chore but also don’t want anyone else doing it either.

The Constitution grants authority over immigration to the federal government because America is one nation. We don’t need 50 different immigration systems. That’s common sense.

Dr. Sarah M. Henry has been a part of the Museum of the City of New York since 2001. Previously, Sarah served as the Robert A. and Elizabeth Rohn Jeffe Chief Curator and Deputy Director at the Museum of the City of New York, overseeing Museum exhibitions (over 200 to date) as well as publications and collections. She is responsible for the exhibition department’s program strategy, long-range planning, and content, and she has led the curatorial work on such acclaimed exhibitions as This Is New York: 100 Years of the City in Art and Pop Culture (2023) and New York at Its Core (2016) and now, The Occupied City: New York and the American Revolution (2026). Sarah received a Ph.D. in U.S. History from Columbia University and a B.A. from Yale in History and Mathematics/Philosophy. She received the Manhattan Borough President’s “History Visionary Award,” is a member of the New York Academy of History and serves on the board of the International Council of Museums’ Committee on the Collections and Activities of Museums of Cities.

David Winters, Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

David A. Winters serves as President of the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, a leading national organization supporting the military community. Since 2000 the Fund has raised over $200 million for families of military personnel lost in Iraq and Afghanistan, and for several special projects serving wounded military personnel. Winters oversees the Fund’s strategic planning, fundraising and program execution. Winters has been with the Fund since its establishment in 2000 and became President in 2011.

In 2011 the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund launched its current program: building a series of ten advanced treatment centers for military personnel suffering the effects of traumatic brain injury. To date $100 million has been raised for this effort, and eight of the ten centers have already been built and are open and operating, with another currently under construction.

Winters also serves as Executive Vice President of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City. Winters’ responsibilities aboard Intrepid include management of events, special projects, government and military relations, and administration of the annual festival programs including Fleet Week, Kids Week and Free Fridays. Mr. Winters also serves as corporate secretary of the Museum. He joined the Intrepid Museum as a volunteer in 1992 and as an employee in 1993.

Winters also serves as the Executive Vice President and Secretary of the Intrepid Relief Fund, which provides support to military personnel and families. Winters’ responsibilities include administration of the Fund and directing fundraising efforts. Winters has worked with this effort since 1994.

Winters served on the 1812 Advisory Group from 2010 through 2012, assisting with the Department of the Navy’s planning for the War of 1812 Bicentennial celebrations. Winters’ involvement in supporting America’s military community began in March 1991, when he helped establish a volunteer charitable effort called Operation Support, which in just three months raised over a quarter million dollars to benefit the families of American military personnel lost in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Winters holds a BA degree from Fordham University.

Not long ago, at Charlie Kirk's memorial service, I sat listening as speaker after speaker talked openly about faith. Not performative faith. Not “spirituality.” Not vague moral language carefully engineered to avoid offending modern sensibilities.

Christian faith. Real faith. The kind that acknowledges man’s depravity, Christ’s sufficiency, and the utter miracle that grace exists at all. And among those voices was Tucker Carlson.

That’s part of what makes the current version of Tucker Carlson so profoundly disorienting. Because where did that guy go?

This isn’t about disagreement. Lord knows conservatives disagree all the time. I’ve disagreed publicly and privately with friends I deeply respect for decades. That’s healthy. It sharpens people.

This is something different. I have dozens of mutual friends and acquaintances who know both Tucker and me. To a person—literally every single one except one—they say some variation of the same thing privately: “That’s not the Tucker I knew.”

More than one has gone even further, wondering aloud whether something deeper is wrong emotionally or psychologically. I’m not qualified to diagnose anybody, nor would I try. But I would be lying if I said the change hasn’t alarmed people who once admired him deeply.

And strangely, Megyn Kelly now seems caught somewhere in the same gravitational pull.
